Enabling

In spite of all we do for our clients, there remains a large section of their lives, which are not touched by companionship. The move from ‘institutional care’ to ‘care in the community’ leaves many requiring the emotional support that can come through family and friends. There is also a need to match volunteers with individual clients to enable them to carry out activities they would like to pursue. The Enabling scheme will allow individuals to partake in an activity that is out of their usual daily activities with the support of a volunteer, e.g. one service user is extremely interested in guitars but does not have the confidence to attend a Guitar club alone. Through volunteer support he can attend the club and may eventually feel confident enough to attend alone, in the meantime he can form a good relationship with the volunteer. Funding is required to fund the salary for the Volunteer Co-ordinator and for expenses that may occur from various activities.

Peppercorns

The Peppercorns project is our largest project and is based in Dartford. The aims of the Peppercorns project are to offer an innovative supported employment scheme together with theatre/dance/music opportunities for adults and children with learning disabilities in North Kent. The project involves the refurbishment of a building already owned by DGS Mencap adjacent to the office. We hope for the Peppercorns project to become a ‘Centre of Excellence’ and to foster a greater understanding between the learning disabled community and the public, both of which will be able to utilise the centre.
The project has already been lucky enough to receive some capital funding. This funding enables the project refurbishment to begin but further funding is required for refurbishment of the building and to maintain the services offered within Peppercorns.

Reminiscence

The Reminiscence project aims to improve the quality of life for people with a learning disability and it enables other members of the community to learn about the past and meet with those who have a learning disability. By representing the heritage of older people with a learning disability they can pass on their memories and experiences of the past to members of the public and other visitors to the project who are younger and have a learning disability. By providing an interesting and inspiring project at the Perry Street Day Centre we feel the project encourages the well being of the day centre members. The project will encourage feeling, emotions, memories and impressions of past life experinces and provides opportunities for further project and development work. This project currently has no funding.
